cats drinking out of toilets?

I have heard a lot of stories from dog owners about their dogs drinking out of the toilet. But this evening I caught my cat doing it. It was funny because I was sure he was going to fall in, but he didn't. But I've never heard of a cat doing this.

they do it because they lack drinking water, that's the only reason I've ever heard of for any animal exhibiting this behaviour.this.

Well I keep Smokey's water bowl full all the time and freshen it often even if it looks like he has not been drinking from it. So maybe it's fresh water he doesn't like, maybe he prefers toilet water. LOL. Or maybe he's just a crazy cat who likes keeping me guessing about what stupid thing he'll do next.

We know when Dougie, Ardeth's dog goes for a pint as we jokingly call it, that his water is either warm ,dirty or absent..

The cat used to when I was growing up used to do that too sometimes. She always had fresh water in her bowl but for some reason she liked drinking from the toilet. She would also go out back and drink from the swimming pool.

My cat does that. It's annoying cause he leaves kitty prints all over the toilet seat. and yeah we do keep his water fresh as well, so no clue as to why they do it.

Some animals develop a taste for toilet bowl water, you could try leaving the seat down which will force your cat to drink from her bowl, but I can't guaranteee that this will work.

that's scary because toilet water can have some bacteria. but see, if you flush the toilet then the water is very fresh. cats like fresh watter.
you should buy a watter despenser that is automatic and electronic. this always keeps the bol of watter fresh and clean.
google water despensers for cats and you find information.
usually these despensers hold about 4 leters of water which is enough for the cat to be full.

Hi, all. Becky, my cat Shadow used to do that, too. He always had a bowl of fresh water, several of them throughout the house, in fact. I wonder if they do it for the novelty? They do balance very well on the rim of the toilet bowl. But I didn't want him doing it, so I started making sure the toilet seat was always down.

Yes, I think they do it for the novelty. My cat, Smokey, has never been caught doing it again since that one time. I guess it was just something new to try.

My cat Pokey will drink out of the toilet if we don't put the seat down. I'm a little paranoid about that, I don't know, so I keep the seat down, but sometimes my parents don't. I've also seen her drink out of the tub when one of us gets out of the shower, so I don't know what that's about. We always keep fresh water in her bowl too, so maybe it's just a preference that some cats have, but it's a weird one if that's true.

The cat I used to have used to drink out of the toilet too even though he always had fresh water. I guess he tried to drink from the pool once too but he fell in. His favorite thing to do was opening and closing cabinets for some reason.

lol, becky. our psycho kitty is a very picky little fat cat. hehehe she won't drink out of her bowl. she has to drink out of the bathroom sink. and it can't sit there very long. she'll cry until you put fresh water there. cats are picky when it comes to there water.

It's funny that people keep bringing this topic up to the top. When I wrote this, we had just gotten Smokey, and he has never tried drinking out of the toilet again. I think it was just a short lived phase he went through.

My cat doesn't drink out of the toilet, but she likes to drink out of the tub. She also prefers to drink out of my dog's bowl instead of hers.

I suppose another way to keep your cat from drinking out of the toilet is not to flush...

Luckyluc, that's just nasty! Yuck! *Laugh* Becky, I think the topic keeps coming back up because it's a universal thing. Lots of people have cats, and it's amazing the number of cats that do stuff like this.

To them water is water. My cat drinks from the toilet, dehumidifier, and even sometimes the shower.
You just have to try and stop them.

My brother caught his little four-month-old pet kitten trying to drink out of the toilet last time he was home visitting. lol But the cat can't reach the water yet.
